For some time now, we have shared a love of Rhone Valley blends and their domestic counterparts. We wanted to experiment with some completely different varietals by putting our California twist on the beautiful interplay between the bright fruit and mineral characteristics of these blends while still maintaining the rich, fruit focused, layered lusciousness we enjoy. We are fortunate to be working with fruit from the exceptional Shake Ridge Vineyard in Amador County. It is a fantastically well-managed site with a diverse soil composition, producing a wine with an incredible flavor profile and depth.

Tasting notes
The 2016 Mixed Blacks is full of exotic spices and bright fruit. Spicy orange peel, pomegranate, sweet violets, dried lavender and a hint of white pepper are captivating on the nose. The palate explodes with tangy dried cranberries, raspberry jam, blueberry cream and a mineral-driven acidity from the rocky Amador County terroir.
Blend Grenache 55%, Syrah 30%, Petite Sirah 12%, Mourvedre 2%, Viognier 1%

All of our vineyards are harvested by hand. The process starts with two people sorting through every cluster on an incline table. The clusters are then gently de-stemmed.All of the red variety fermentations happen in various size tanks or barrels (225L /500L).  All of the red varieties are generally cold soaked for 2-3 days to achieve a homogeneous “must” and to kick start the phenolic extraction. All red fermentations are inoculated with commercial yeasts to allow control on temperature, microbial activity and maceration techniques. The average time on skins range from 10 to 22 days. All reds go through malolactic fermentation. The goals for the MLF process is to be slow and last for at least 2 to 3 months.Maturation process The Cabernet and Merlot are in barrel for approximately 18-22 months.
